Maintaining Team Chemistry and Activity in the Offseason

It takes a good chunk of the season to develop team chemistry in any sport. Training together week after week, big games as a team and the odd social event helps to bring the crew together.
But when the season ends and people return to other sports or put more energy into other areas of life like work and family, that chemistry, as well as fitness levels, can drop away.

Greg. changes that. It enables teams to stay as one throughout the breaks and maintain those bonds, enjoy each other’s company, and keep the extra kilos off.

The activity function takes the best parts of other apps and puts it into one. You’ll never have to rock up for a session not knowing who to expect. You can enter all the important details, like specific locations, attendance limits and any costs involved to avoid forking out the weekly fee without anyone paying you back.

Team groups can set up private or public activities, invite people within or outside the group, chat amongst themselves and post motivations to keep encouraging everyone.

How would your team use it?
  • Jono always comes out and wins the first trial of preseason by 3 laps. Sam, on the other hand, is paying $1.01 to log a DNF. Jono starts putting his own runs on Greg as an activity and drags Sam and others along.
  • Mitch works nightshift in the offseason. He always loses his motivation on nights.
Gavin also works nightshift and starts putting his morning sessions on Greg. Mitch sees there is other people in his situation, and they begin training together.
  • Eric is thinking of signing up to the team next season, so he joins the team group on Greg. He sees an activity - a jog followed by a beer at the local on Saturday arvo. Eric can head along to see how he likes it and get to know some of his future teammates.

The examples don’t stop there, but I’m out of fake names. You’ll find more and more uses for the function as you get to know the app.

Who can use it?

Teams involved in any sport at any level have a place on Greg and can make use of the activity function.

Elite football teams with 60 players, 10-man social basketball teams, corporate volleyball teams of 4 or running clubs with thousands of members.

Every level needs the ability to communicate, plan and organise.

The TL; DR

Greg enables your team to stay fit, stay connected and check in on each other throughout the offseason. Whether it’s the new lads, quiet players, loudmouths, team leaders or those who need an extra kick up the a**, Greg is the guy to bring them all together, more often.

Dubler & Maloney

Doing a Dubler

Australia, we have a new modus operandi – ‘Doing a Dubler’

Cedric Dubler won’t be coming home from the Tokyo Olympics with a medal around his neck. But his legendary act of manspiration displayed during the last race of the men’s 10-event Decathlon should forever be engraved on the psyche of Australian guys.

For those of you who need catching up, Dubler dropped back in the final stages of the 1500m race to passionately cheer and spur on his teammate Ash Maloney to finish the race strongly. Ash would ultimately cross the line in 12th  place - enough to take out Bronze.

At that moment, two things became clear.

  1. Decathalons are bloody hard.
  1. We all need a Dubler in our lives.

When you think about it, life can feel like a Decathalon we run alone. Every day we’re confronted by daunting challenges, from work races, to relationship hurdles and parenting pressures (hell, even remembering to put the bin out can be an event). And if you fail? It’s your own damn vault.

It’s time we realised manhood isn’t DIY. We all need a mate to encourage, challenge and inspire us, a mate that’s always there to crack a joke or lift our spirits when the going gets tough (we checked - it’s in the Ts and Cs of being an Australian).

‘Doing the Dubler’ is the Greg way. Greg is your number one fan that cheers you on to succeed in whatever you do. I'm not talking about representing your country in elite sport. I’m talking about those day-to-day activities that help you live your life to the fullest.

Trying to extend your deck? Greg’s got your back. Trying to lose a few kilos? Greg’s got your back. Wanting to get back into a team sport? Greg’s got your back.

So, what’s the first thing you can do? Set a goal. Something real, that you can measure and you can start to make a plan around. Once you’ve done this, post it as a Motivation in the app and tag GregHQ. Let’s find the connections you need to make this a reality. Whatever stage of life you’re at, keep looking forward and thinking about what’s next. There is no judgement here.

And that's just the start. Remember, we’re all part of Team Man, the world’s biggest brotherhood. So who are you cheering for? Tag a mate that needs to know you’re rooting for them.

Let's ‘Do a Dubler’ together.

Get involved in activities and sports

There is a whole heap of reasons why we stop playing team sports and in general, being active.

Time poor, not enough money, health reasons, no motivation or age are the general culprits, so Greg. set about outlining some ways to get involved, with minimal commitment.

Let’s do the rounds

Already a member of a sporting club?

Existing sporting club members, e.g. state league football club like our mates at the Eagles, should check out their partner discounts for access to a local gym, or see what facilities you can access as a member, maybe an onsite gym or other equipment you could utilize.

The cost of memberships for some of these clubs may also be subsidized if you volunteer your services.

Major Event

Fun runs or community bike rides, can be such an easy way to get involved, the event organisers provide all the motivation, infrastructure and services you need.

The City to Bay put on FREE training sessions and help set you up for a good experience. Join Team Greg. at the City to Bay this September

Filling in

Being a ring in has its perks – it’s like trying before you buy! No commitment, you may just have to pay a weekly attendance fee and make sure you have the right gear.

Finding teams and fill ins is what Greg. is good at! Drop Greg. a note letting him know what activity or sport you are looking for and what area, and let the magic happen!

SA AFL masters huddle

Get back into football with AFL Masters and AFL 9’s

Play AFL Masters, it’s footy and its fun! There are 16 clubs in SA alone and there is minimal commitment with games generally played fortnightly. More info on Masters Football.

Or try AFL 9’s - fast and fun and non-contact! Find out more about AFL 9’s.

Have a hit of tennis

Tennis is a fun sport that everyone can play & it’s pretty easy to get started. Look for open court sessions or hire a court. Find where to play tennis.

Hire some gear

The sharing economy is rich right now – hit up the members of your local Buy Nothing Facebook group to borrow some equipment, check out Marketplace to pick up something second hand, try Quipmo, a peer to peer gear rental platform or a traditional equipment hire shop like bike shops or golf club hire - try our friends down at Grange Golf Club.

Looking at getting started in activities like surfing or snorkelling or mountain bike riding, look for a qualified tour company that provides all the gear, so you can learn what equipment you may need and also if you actually like the activity, before you make a commitment.

Play time

Get on Greg, choose what you are interested in and look through Connect at the Clubs and Business and following those providing experiences you are keen on.

If you are raring to go, set up a public Group and name it something like Tennis at Henley Beach or Stand up paddle boarding at Noarlunga, and post that mates are welcome to join in.

Or invite your mates, check your kit and get to it.

Follow up with a motivation post in the app so we can all feel good about it!
